Islam is a complete religion that guides us in every part of life. Along with the five daily prayers, Allah(S.W.A) teaches us to seek His help and blessings before starting any task. Especially when we travel, even for Hajj, Umrah, or any other purpose, we should ask Allah(S.W.A) for protection and success, just as the Prophet (P.B.U.H) taught us. No matter how we travel by car, train, or airplane, it is important to recite the travel prayers before starting the journey. We can plan everything, but only Allah(S.W.A) knows what will happen next. That is why a believer always asks Allah(S.W.A) for guidance and safety, hoping to reach the destination safely and return home to loved ones without harm. Reciting prayers not only brings peace to the heart but also makes the journey blessed. Through these duas, Allah(S.W.A) protects us from accidents, problems, and difficulties, and rewards us for remembering Him. Therefore, every Muslim should make dua and the remembrance of Allah (S.W.A) a regular part of every journey to ensure a safe, peaceful, and successful trip.
Benefits Dua for Travelling and Blessings of Dua in Islam
Islam is a complete way of life that guides us in our journey, whether it is worship or travel. The Holy Quran, Allah’s Book of Guidance, teaches us that this world is temporary and that human life is always in motion. In the Quran, the word “Sayr” (to travel or move) is mentioned several times, showing that traveling, observing, and reflecting on Allah’s creation strengthen our faith and increase our knowledge.
As Allah(S.W.A) says in the Quran:
“Do they not travel through the earth so that their hearts may learn wisdom and their ears may learn to hear?”
(Surah Al-Hajj, 46)
The Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H) also encouraged traveling. He said that traveling helps believers gain knowledge and a better understanding of life. In another hadith, the Prophet(P.B.U.H) advised
“Travel by night, for the earth is compressed (made easier to cross) at night.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood)
Before starting a journey, the Prophet (P.B.U.H) taught us to perform two Rakaats of Nafl (voluntary) prayer.
He said:
“When you leave your house, pray two Rak’ahs; it will protect you from harm. And when you return home, pray two Rak’ahs again; it will keep you safe from harm.”
(Musnad Al-Bazzar)
You can recite any Surah in these Rak’ahs, but it is good to read Surah Al-Kafirun in the first Rak’ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second. Before leaving home, you should also recite the Dua for leaving the house, as it keeps Satan away and brings Allah’s protection throughout your journey.
Dua for Leaving the House
Before leaving for Umrah or any journey, it is highly recommended to recite this beautiful dua taught by the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). This short supplication places you under Allah’s protection and fills your journey with peace, safety, and blessings.
“In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah; there is no power or strength except with Allah.”
Dua Before Starting Your Journey
In Islam, traveling is not just something we do for work, it is also a spiritual experience. The Holy Quran reminds us that every vehicle or way of travel is a gift from Allah(S.W.A).
Allah says in qaran:
“Glory be to Him who has made this (ride) possible for us, though we could never have done it by ourselves. And surely, we will return to our Lord.”
(Surah Az-Zukhruf: 13–14)
This beautiful verse teaches us to be thankful to Allah(S.W.A) every time we travel. Before starting any journey, we should pray, ask for forgiveness, and trust Allah (S.W.A) to keep us safe.
Dua for Travel Safety
Whenever you start a journey, make sure to recite this beautiful dua taught by the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). It brings blessings, peace, and protection from any kind of harm or difficulty during travel.
“O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance. O Allah, You are our Helper on the journey and the Protector of our family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, unpleasant sights, and from returning to any harm in wealth or family.”
Sahih Muslim (Hadith No. 1342)
When you return home, it is Sunnah to pray two Rak’ahs of Nafl prayer, just as you did before leaving.
Dua for Starting the Journey
Whenever the Prophet (P.B.U.H) started a journey, he would recite this beautiful dua after mounting his ride. This supplication reminds us that every journey should begin with the name of Allah and be completed with trust in Him.
Translation:
“Allah is the Almighty, Allah is the Almighty, Allah is the Almighty. Glory be to the One who has made this transport possible for us, though we could never have controlled it by ourselves. Surely, we will return to our Lord.
O Allah, we ask You for goodness and piety in this journey, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance. O Allah, You are our Helper during travel and the Protector of our family. O Allah, protect us from the difficulties of the journey, unpleasant sights, and from returning home with harm or loss in our wealth or family.”
